Located on the Northeast area of Costa Rica's
Caribbean coast, between the Tortuguero Lagoon and the Caribbean Sea.
You can reach the lodge by land/boat or by air. By land is a 3 hours
drive from San Jose towards the Port of Marina followed by a 2 to 2
1/2 riverboat trip along the Canals of Tortuguero to Mawamba Lodge.
By air takes 30 minutes from San Jose to Tortuguero Airstrip.
This airstrip is just a 5 minute boat-ride to the lodge.
Overview
Mawamba is a 15 acre beachfront lodge located on the right side of Tortuguero
offering nice views to the Canals. It is the ideal hideaway for nature
lovers and people seeking for soft adventure.
Tortuguero is a navigable network of lakes
and canals that crosse the National Park from Southeast to the Northwest.
This allows a great diversity of fauna and flora of the region to be
seen at close hand. Activities include day excursions to Tortuguero
National Park, visit to the town and Caribbean Corporation of Conservation
(CCC). During season (July-September) night tours to search for the
nesting of the Green Turtle (Chelonia Mydas) are available.
Its beautiful gardens and rustic accommodations,
blends with the exuberant jungle vegetation, exotic birds and wildlife
creating the perfect balance of nature. Two family style restaurants
catering international and delicious local cuisine and a pool-bar surrounded
by beautiful gardens where you can enjoy exotic tropical cocktails.
The lodge has two docks, a swimming pool,
Jacuzzi, souvenir shop, relaxing ranchos with hammocks, nature trails,
walking beach access, volleyball sand court and a conference room with
A/C, where lectures of Tortuguero National History and videos are presented
daily.
Mawamba began operation in 1985. Improvements in infrastructure include
18 additional rooms completed last March as well as re-polished floors, new verandas and screens in rooms. Remodeling of bathrooms
in the original building and re-decoration of rooms have also been done.
Accommodations
The lodge features 54 comfortable rooms with private bathrooms, hot
water and ceiling fans. Rooms have either 3 single beds or one double
bed and one single bed. Hotel has a capacity to host up to 100 people.
Fishing
Fishing for Snook and Tarpon is available upon request depending on
weather conditions and season.

Restaurants
Chelonia Restaurant for lunch and private meals are available at the Limbo Grill and Bar for breakfast and dinner. Special menus for incentive groups are available.
Activities/Entertainment
The lodge offers regular boat
tours to the small canals and hikes into the lush rain forests of the
National Park area,
in which nature lovers can observe the mangroves, many species of birds,
mammals and reptiles. For the most adventurous person, hiking to the Cerro
Tortuguero is a must. All tours are conducted and supervised by naturalists
and professionally trained guides with all necessary safety precautions.
Guests can enjoy the swimming pool, jacuzzi,
volleyball and beach combing. During turtle nesting season, optional
night tour can be arranged with local guides. (Dark clothes are
requested)
Conference Facilities
Conference room with air conditioning has a capcity for 40 people. Seminars
can be arranged. Audiovisual equipment is available for rent.
Recommendations
Comfortable, light clothing, walking shoes or tennis shoes, sunglasses,
hat, sun lotion, insect repellent and bathing suit.
Weather
Mawamba is located in a tropical forest of Costa Rica. Climate is warm
and humid. Average annual temperature is 80 degrees F. and rainfall is 3,000-5,000 mm p/year.
Air Services
Domestic airlines serving daily from San Jose to Tortuguero Airstrip
are SANSA and TRAVELAIR. Also private charter flights can be arranged. Estimated flying time:30 minutes.
Packages
Mawamba has regular packages which includes round trip land and
boat transfers from San Jose, meals and road, all meals at the Lodge,
regular tours, lodging depending on the number of nights on the package
selected and specialized naturalist bilingual guides. The program can
be altered due to weather conditions.
